Tanzania Youth Empowerment

 Schools & Projects

The goal of the Tanzania Youth Empowerment is to encourage Tanzanian teenagers to realize the power of their ideas and inclusive collaboration for bringing about change and improvements in their communities.

I was drawn to Tanzania, my father's homeland, and inspired by the work of the Aga Khan Foundation and my experience of Camp Rising Sun's collaborative culture and its global social mission. During my sophomore year in high school, I founded the Tanzania Youth Empowerment project primarily for 6th and 7th grade students in the Moshi area, Tanzania. In 2015, the project was expanded to Arusha and also, piloted in a high school.

To date, over 800 students from ten schools have participated. They generated ideas to improve their communities within a budget, lobbied for their ideas, and came together to vote. In each school, the students collaborated and democratically chose a project for the betterment of their school community.
