PROJECT

Tanzania Youth Empowerment

I will work to complete fund raising for the summer 2015 school projects by May 2016. Fund raising will be in person and/ or online using crowd rise or other sites.

During the summer of 2016, I hope to return to Tanzania to revisit the schools involved in the project during the 2015 summer, and to expand the project to other schools in Tanzania.

PROJECT

Learn Free International

Thinking about how useful the internet has been in some of my learning, I designed and made laminated sheets with helpful educational internet sites (blue sheets for student learning and yellow for teachers).

During 2014, giving the laminated sheets to the Tanzania Youth Empowerment school administrators seemed less relevant for their use: computers were scarce with little or no internet connection.

During 2015 summer, the change was impressive. Some of the administrators of the schools that had received the sheets were now familiar with educational sites such as Kahn Academy, and most had computer rooms and computer science courses (classes usually done with software, without internet connection). Some schools are now close to having wider internet connection that would allow students to be online.

Also hope to partner with First Chance Nursery School (Tsaranga, Tanzania); Second Chance School (Tsaranga, Tanzania) to track usefulness of the sites.

PROJECT

 Partnership for Computer donations

I was fortunate to meet the owner/ partner of a software projects and consultation company in United Kingdom. In discussing the Youth Tanzania Empowerment project with him and explaining the needs in the schools, he very generously offered to help, and is considering donating computers and televisions to the schools.

PROJECT

Soaps for Hopes: Partnership with Tanzanian Soap Makers

A cooperative in Moshi plans to produce soaps locally. The soaps, which will be wrapped in dried banana leaves are expected to be ready for marketing and possibly for sale in early to mid 2016. Once I receive samples, I will market the soaps here in NYC and possibly other locations in the United States. The cooperative is happy to share the profits above the price of the producers from any sales I affect in the United States with local schools they wish to support and the Tanzania Youth Empowerment schools.

PROJECT

LAJF- Camp Rising Sun Partnership

I was hoping to share the experience with others and expand the project to schools beyond Tanzania. I thought that CRS campers might be interested in applying their CRS experience, and mission to serve, to their communities back home. I gave a presentation to campers at CRS about peer to peer Tanzania Youth Empowerment as an example of how they need not wait for adulthood to work towards partnering with other students to improve communities. Campers from five countries expressed interest in starting the same project in their local middle schools in their countries.

I will be preparing materials to send and share the proposals and approach developed over the past two years with the interested campers. With them, I hope to start a community of CRS alumni working in different parts of the world toward a common goal.
